Discovering your ‘face shape’

Welcome back to the latest instalment from Diva Dressing.

In this blog post I’m sharing my top tips for maximizing your ‘face shape’ and providing advice on what to avoid.

Oval shaped face

Try a variety of styles.  Just about any hair shape looks good on you. Your ‘perfect’ features allow you to wear a wider range of styles than any other face shape. Have you ever noticed the majority of models fall into this shape? And how many different hair styles they can wear?

You can wear short, medium and long hair styles. Your face shape is well ‘balanced’ or in even proportion. You will look best when styling your hair off your face. Most oval faces can wear slicked-backed looks as well.

Avoid

Hair styles that cover up your ‘perfect’ features with heavy bangs, or too forward-directed styles.

In wearing your hair style on your face, you’ll lose your face shape behind the hair. This may appear to add weight to your face

 

Rectangular or oblong shaped face

Try styles with short to medium lengths.  Fullness at the sides of your face and wispy bans soften the look of longer face shapes. You’ll want to balance the look of a long and slender face. Soft wispy bangs will shorten the appearance of the length. Fullness at the sides of your face will add width to the look of your face shape.

By cutting the hair into a short or medium length, the outline of the cut will also shorten the look of the length of the face. Layers work great with your face shape, as they will add softness to the straight lines in your face. Try side parts, and you may be able to wear straight back styles.

Avoid

Too much hair length …. This will make you face look even longer! Too much height lengthens your face. Center parts look great on people with a rectangular or oblong face shape. When your hair grows past you shoulders, there is a good chance it is doing you more harm than good. The models with rectangular face shapes and long hair get by with it only because they have an ‘on call’ hairdresser. This professional is at the models disposal and is styling to add fullness to the hair most of the day. Since most of us don’t have this luxury, my suggestion is to keep it above shoulder length.

 

Round shaped face with a round chin & hairline

Try hair styles with fullness and height at the crown. Off center parts help reduce the roundness around the face3.Wispy bangs will soften the angular shape. Off-center parts with height at the crown look great on square faces. You want to soften the square look of your face with layers and wispy looks around the face. Height at the crown will elongate you symmetrical shape. If you hair is straight you may want to consider a body wave, as some curl or wave to the hair will achieve a nice balance to the straight features of you face shape.

Avoid

Long straight styles that accentuate the square jawbone. Linear’ straight bangs or center partings aren’t the best choice. A straight bob ending at the jaw line is the wrong Thing to do for you face shape. You can wear a layered bob; however it should end above or below the jaw line, not at the jaw. Mare sure in styling that you achieve some roundness though the shape and some height at the crown or bangs and you will be on the right tract.

 

Heart shaped face – wide at the temples and hairline, narrowing to a small delicate chin

Try chin-length or longer styles work well with a heart shaped face. Other styles to try – side-parted hair styles or swept-forward layers around the upper face with gently wispy bangs. A chin length bob is great on your face shape! This creates a balanced book by giving fullness where you need it. You can wear shorter styles; however, if you are a dramatic heart shape you need to leave weight in the back nape area. This will achieve more balance between your dramatic cheekbones and narrower chin.

Avoid

Short, full styles that emphasize the upper face. Stay away from styles with too much height at the crown.  Severe, slicked back looks are too harsh for this shape too. If you are a dramatic heart shape, the short, full styles with tapered necklines, which emphasize the upper face, will make you look top heavy. Too much height at the crown will give the appearance of a longer and narrower chin, Just remember if you have a dramatic heart shape face you have great cheekbones to emphasize, don’t miss the boat by getting a cut which is too top heavy.

 

Triangular shaped face – a dominant jaw line with narrowing at the cheek bone and temples

Try shorter hair that balances prominent jaw line. Styles that are full at the temples and taper at the jaw are perfect for you. Off center partings, wedges and Shags look great on you too. You need lots of layers to achieve fullness through the upper part of your face. By wearing styles which are full at the temples and taper at the jaw line, you achieve a balance that can be striking in accentuating features otherwise understated. Try tucking hair behind you ears, as this will draw attention to your eyes and add the illusion of width in this area.

Avoid

Long, full hair styles that draw attention to jaw line. Center parts – off – center is more flattering to you.

Stay away from styles with too much height at the crown. You also want to avoid putting most of the weight of a haircut at the jaw line and below. This will give the appearance of added weight to the face.

If going with long hair, it should be kept tight at the nape.

 

DIAMOND shaped face – widest at the cheekbones, and narrow equally at the forehead and jaw line

Try experimenting with a variety of styles. Almost everything works with your face (as long as you are a true diamond). You can wear shorter styles. However, if you are a dramatic diamond shape you need to leave weight in the back nape area like someone with a heart shaped face, this will achieve more balance between your dramatic cheekbones and more delicate chin line.

Avoid

You can do just about everything, but try not to wear too much hair on your face, thereby hiding your great features.

Wearing accessories for maximum effect…

A very warm welcome to the latest instalment from Diva Dressing.

In this blog we’ll be looking at accessories and how to get the most out of wearing them.

Accessories - often this word can put the fear of god into some people!

Questions that spring to mind include; How much? Where? What colour? How big?

Are you confused? Lots of people are and so they don’t wear any…or they play it very very safe.

Accessories are not just bags and jewellery; they also include the following:-

Print
Texture
Boobs
jewellery including belt buckles

Imagine some old fashion weighing scales; the type your grandmother had with the separate weights and if you dropped them on your toes it really hurt!

Have you got that picture in your head?

Now on one side I want you to put in weights for how tall you are

1 = petite
3 = Average
5 = Tall

Next put weights in for how big your bone structure is

1 = Fine
3 = Medium
5 = Grand

Now some of you will have scales that are crashing on the floor; others may have less of an impact.

If you’re in the middle;

  • instead of wearing a pattern,a thicker cardie and a little pendant keep everything simple and plain and put on a big long, bulky statement necklace, or have a shirt in this seasons fashionable geometric prints.

If you are tall and well built;

  • again don’t do pattern/texture /jewelry together as this just confuses the eye. Keep the texture of the material thin.

If you have larger boobs;

  • remember that they are an accessory by themselves. You don’t need anything else going on in that area, no ruffles , no patterns no necklaces that land on them. The other way to wear necklaces is to have them very long so that they go over ‘the hump’ and land at about your belly button or a bit above.

TIP: Very long necklaces can be expensive so cheat – put a cheap chain or leather necklace on the hooks of your statement item, this will lengthen it enough and still looks good (you can buy these special extenders in some magazines!)

So now you have some idea of how much to wear here is a few necessities you need to know about

Wearing the right accessories comes down to your bone size and your shape not your weight!

Accessories reflect your personality and should always be in tune with what you’re wearing.

Remember that less is sometimes more. Be daring; they really can make a boring outfit look fantastic.

Bags:

You should have at least 7 bags (show this to your partner)

Day bag – brown – can be worn with all colours except black.
Day bag – black – wear with black, white, grey or taupe.
Funky bag – playtime, dinner or lunch lots of colours, sequins or buttons
Evening bag – match it with your jewelry gold or silver
Travel bag – the right size to fit into an overhead locker on a plane and doubling as a weekend bag
Beach bag – lined so any spills can be wiped
No bag bag – for when only credit card, key and phone needed

Hats:

High forehead – beanies or anything goes. Be careful if you have eye bags to avoid low brims.

Low forehead – always need to have high crowned hats.

Scarves:
Scarves can look great worn as belts, especially with jeans
Short necks - wear scarves wrapped round the neck, but choose lightweight material
Long necks – wear them looped and tied in most textures

Belts:

Small boned – keep buckle small (even if carry extra weight)
Large boned – have large buckle (not thin belts)
If wearing one colour – keep belt in tone
Long backs – wear belts low to stop behind looking too big.
Large boobs or short waists - be careful with belts as too much in this area causes confusion, in a small space.

Necklaces:

If you have a short neck or big boobs - necklaces should be one of the lesser items in your accessory collection. Stick to delicate pieces that don’t take up too much space.

Long necks - look for much bigger pieces. Chokers look good in crew necks and wear big chunky necklaces at collarbone level.

Flat chests – wear wonderful necklaces that reach as low as your waist.

Earrings:

Long faces – chandelier earrings as well as studs.

Round faces and double chins – look good in round and dangly earrings.

Short necks - look good with discreet sleepers rather than studs.

Medium sized hoops suit everyone.

Wardrobe audit time…out with the old!

A happy New year to you all and welcome back to the Diva Dressing blog.

Seeing as a new year is a new start; it’s also a good time to have a look at that wardrobe of yours and start making some decisions!

Many of you will have been putting this off for some time and your wardrobe may well now be looking a little bit tired, worn and even messy to the eye.

It can be disheartening…

It can be confusing…

It can be that closing the door quickly so that stuff doesn’t fall out is a metaphor to how you are feeling and your emotions.

If you don’t look to closely at them and you shut the door hoping that they’ll just stay there out of sight and out of mind…great! However, one day the whole lot is going to fall out under the weight as the rail has broken.

All in all it can be really depressing! Does this ring any bells?

So it really can help your emotional state if that wardrobe is organized, neat and efficient.

How much time in the morning does it take you to find an outfit – too long?

Do you have a wardrobe stuffed of clothes but nothing to wear?

Well now is the time to address it! (Please note the play on words)

You will need

Bin bags, baskets, rails (available from Argos etc) a full length mirror and may be a good friend to help you. You can then do the same for her!

Here goes;

1. Decide what clothes you’re going to wear for the next couple of days and put them aside
2. Moving into the spare room may be helpful
3. Empty your wardrobe completely putting all trousers in one place, tops in another, jackets in another pile and so on
4. Clean all sections including the rails
5. Now start with the trousers – if you know they fit and they look great (probably only one pair if you’re like most people) then put them on a rail
6. Try all the other trousers on and ask yourself these questions

o Do they fit?
o Are they the right length?
o Do they match my body shape?
o Do I like them?
o Are they in good condition?

1. If you answer yes to all these – put them on the rail
2. If they don’t fit – put them in the charity box/bag (NO you won’t slim into them and if you ever do then you want the joy of buying yourself a new pair)
3. If they are tattered and torn – into the recycling box
4. If the trousers are too short for your leg length (see previous articles then nothing can be done – either make them cropped trousers for the summer or off to the charity shop!

7. After you’ve done the trousers do the same with skirts, dresses, Jackets and tops
8. Section all items into resale/Charity/Archive/Keep
9. Relocate archive items of sentimental value in either a separate wardrobe section or storage solution such as vacuum packed.
10. Be firm with yourself and don’t hang on to dated/tired items unless sentimental
11. Consider your lifestyle and tailor your wardrobe to it – remember you can mix and match items for work with casual items to add more variety to your wardrobe.
12. The most successful wardrobes are always those that have only limited numbers of items in them.
13. Re-hang garments in sections i.e. all jackets together, all shirts together.
14. Then colour coordinate your garments within the sections ( sounds a bit an.., but it does help)
15. If possible keep seasons separate and cover out of season garments to protect from dust.
16. Only have what you want to wear in your wardrobe this will make it much quicker and easier to get dressed and reduce repeat buying
17. As your going along make a list of items you have missing or items you need to complete an outfit.
18. Keep checking looks by trying on and experimenting putting different clothes together
19. Update classic pieces with accessories or a new pair of shoes (oh what fun!)
20. Replace basics such as vests, t-shirts, underwear and everyday shoes regularly
21. Line your drawers with scented drawer liners for fresh smelling clothes
22. Use drawer dividers to section underwear, tights ,belts, scarves and ties
23. Sit back and enjoy the look of your wardrobe, the ease in which you can get ready in the morning and the clarity and peace of mind that it gives.

All this work may sound daunting – but physically, mentally and financially you will really benefit from it.

Diva tricks of the trade…part 3

Welcome back to the Diva Dressing blog and many thanks to all my readers and for all your feedback.

This time I’m back to provide the final installment of the ‘Diva’s Tricks of the Trade’ series.

Before you get started, dig out your piece of paper with your body shape on it…or read the previous blog posts on ‘Diva’s Tricks of the Trade’.

Short Legs and Long Torso

Choose:

Attention at or above the waist

Belts (if your waist is trim) as you have room on your top area

Interesting buttons on jackets, keeping the trouser simple

Short jackets, Bolero to hip length

Shorter skirts just above knee to mini, depending on age and muscle tone

Hosiery to tone with skirt and shoes

Higher shoes

Hem to the ground when wearing trousers with high heels

Dresses over trousers cover up where the legs begin, but only with high heels

Palazzo pants

Wide flares with heels

Probably have long back, so layer t-shirts

Three-quarter length jacket worn with trousers and heels

Long skirts have to have heels

Calf length skirt with high boots in the same colour

Keep colour flowing – same on shoe, sock and trouser

Things to avoid:

Light or patterned hosiery

Long Jackets, especially if teamed with long skirt

Flat shoes

Cropped trousers will only accentuate your lack of leg

Second dropped waistband

Drainpipe jeans unless tucking in to jeans and keep boots well below knee

High-waisted trousers – accentuate a low-slung bum

Bias cut skirt ending mid calf

Long skirt and flat shoes

Now if you have Long legs and a Short body – aren’t you lucky, but here are few guide lines for you – but believe you me you have it so much easier

Long Legs and Short Torso

Choose:

Long skirts

Skirts on the bias

Kick pleats

Knife pleats

Long sarongs

Detailed hemlines

Longer jackets

Unstructured jackets ending mid-thigh/knee (if hips not too broad)

Drop-waisted dresses

Low slung hip belts

Things to avoid:

Short skirts too far from the knee

High heeled shoes

Deep belts

Fuss at the waistline

Diva tricks of the trade…part 2

Welcome back to the Diva Dressing blog and many thanks to all my readers so far and for all your feedback.

Last time I left you with some quick and simple ways to find your body shape, so let’s begin this blog by looking at people with:-

Short Legs & a Long Torso

You have a choice when you have short legs to lengthen them in one of two ways;

First of all: you can lengthen them from the bottom and this can be done very easily with heels.
Please be aware that this will only work if the shoes are covered up. This also works if you are wearing flat shoes and your legs will look longer if you cannot see the shoes.

For this to be effective you will need to be wearing boot leg trousers, Kick flares or wide leg trousers; a couple of millimeters off the floor.

What do you do if…you sometimes wear high shoes and sometimes wear flat? The easiest option is to buy your trousers to match you shoe height!

With jeans – if you are fortunate enough to find a pair that fit you perfectly and you want to wear them for both casual day time in flat shoes and going out attire with heels, then the only option is to buy them in TWO lengths.  This will extend the life of your trousers and make you look far more elegant on both occasions.

TOP TIP
Trousers that fit you fantastically well from a cheaper shop e.g. Tesco, will look more expensive on you than an expensive pair that don’t fit you so well!!! They just won’t last as long, so it is worth looking everywhere for that perfect pair of Jeans.

Secondly: If extending your leg length from the bottom isn’t easy then you have to extend your leg length from the top.

This means wearing shorter jackets and tops and it’s a great effortless way to make your legs appear longer. Wear the same colour trouser and tee-shirt so you have block colour and then have a shorter jacket, cardie or crop top in a contrasting colour. This will give the eye the illusion of the legs being long and the body a lot shorter.

Extra trick: If neither of these work, then you have to give yourself some extra help with the use of verticals

1. Pin stripes on the trouser
2.Crease down the front

The more you do lengthen at the bottom, lengthen at the top and have verticals then the longer and more elegant your legs will look.

Remember: When it comes to short legs, horizontals are your enemy as they cut off and make things look shorter. No turn ups, no combat trousers as they have horizontals all the way down with zips and pockets, no checks or major patterns!

When you have a long torso this can make your bottom look very long and flat. To prevent this happening you have to use horizontals to our advantage. Whilst they cut off they can also give the appearance of making things seem smaller by breaking an area up. Pockets and waistband seams will all break that bottom area up. Remember to look at the rear view too!

With skirts life can be complicated. As a general rule, ladies with short legs should only wear two lengths;

1. Very long
2. Knee length and above

How short you go is dependent on how good your legs are.

Dresses on the whole should be kept knee and above!

Diva tricks of the trade…part 1

Welcome back to the Diva Dressing blog.

This week I’m building on ‘how to dress to suit your body shape. Everyone has imbalances and to a certain extent all of us compensate for some of this instinctively. When it works and when it doesn’t, you know it. Often you’ll have no idea why and this is what I support people with.

When you look at a picture on the wall, your eyes like to see it balanced. If a picture is crooked it may annoy you and it may put the whole wall out of balance. Your brain does this assessment immediately and instinctively and this is what happens when you look in the mirror.

You may have a perfectly good outfit. A beautiful colour and it looks great on your friend who is the same height and weight as you. For some reason (you convince yourself) it looks wrong and so you take that outfit off and it goes to the back of the wardrobe again and again!!

Now if you’ve read my last blog, you’ll have a few measurements dotted on a piece of paper and some explanation of what that means. If you haven’t, it’s best to read that blog first.

Check that your measurements are in centimetres (this just makes the measuring more accurate)

Your sheet should include the following details;

Tall / Medium / Petite

Long legs with a short body / Short legs with a Long body

Note that if you are very tall, you may have always assumed that you have long legs because you wear long-legged trousers or you can never find any that are long enough and that your legs are longer than anyone else’s. Please be aware that they can be short when we’re talking about them in comparison with the length of your torso, so please trust the figures.

The same applies to people who are short in stature. You can often have long legs in comparison with your body.

You will have discovered that you are either;

Short-waisted or Long-waisted or Balanced

Your overall body shape depends on the width of your shoulders compared to the width of your hips will be;

Apple / Inverted Triangle / Straight / Pear / Hourglass / Round if you are an hourglass carrying extra weight


You will have discovered that your bone structure is;

Fine / Medium / Grand

Let’s find your body shape

Wow…back in the ‘hot seat’ and continuing where I left off with The Psychology of Clothes

Thinking back to Epictetus;

“Know, first, who you are; then adorn yourself accordingly”

Now lets help you find your body shape.

Don’t panic – this doesn’t involve waist or bust sizes! What you do need are:

  • A friend or partner to help
  • Two tape measures – a firm metal builders type and a soft dressmaking type
  • A piece of paper and a pen

To begin with, stand with your back to your partner with your shoes off.

Then measure your height with the firm tape measure and record it.

1.6m or less and you’re Petite
1.6m – 1.65m you’re Average height
1.65m or above then you’re Tall

Next measure your inside leg and record it as your leg length.

Then take away your leg measurement from your height measurement and record that as your body length.

This will tell you whether you have short legs and a long body or long legs and a short body. Record this on your piece of paper.

Next - look out for the pink lines!

From the side of your body measure the distance between your inside leg length and your armpit (a)

Again from side of your body, measure the distance between your natural waist and your armpit (b)

Take away measurement (b) from measurement (a) to give you measurement (c)

If  (b) is less than (c) then you’re short-waisted. If (c) is less than (b) then your long-waisted. Record which one you are.

Finally – keep looking out for the pink lines!

Stand with your back to your partner and get them to measure your shoulder width

Then stand with your back to your partner and get them to measure your hip width

If your shoulder width is wider then you’re an ‘inverted triangle’

If your hip width is wider then you’re a ‘pear shape’

If they’re the same then you’re are either an ‘hour-glass’ or you’re ‘straight’

So there you go; you have a better understanding about body shapes!
